Umar Bakri. People outside Indonesia probably are not familiar with that name. But if you are reading this and not an Indonesian, ask someone that name when you come to my country and I believe she or he will tell you who Umar Bakri is.
Well, Umar Bakri is a fictitious character in a famous country song, from the one and only, the legendary Iwan Fals. Iwan Fals, in this song, ironically tells a sad story about a civil servant teacher named Umar Bakri whose life is miserable though he is a hero for his students. He only rides an old bicycle, wears worn out uniform, and gets his salary cut but government. Fals wrote the song probably two decades ago and such stereotype does not exist anymore (though probably in certain villages it still does), but what he tells us about how sometimes miserable a teacher's life is, still happens over and over.
If you watched the Emmy Awards 2010 two weeks ago, it is hard not to notice that some dramas that won the awards featured teachers as the main characters. Yup, I believe when you watched it you will soon mention Will Schuester, Ray Drecker, Sue Silvester, and Walter White are 'the best teachers' in this year. Let's see if their lives are as miserable as Umar Bakri.
1. Will Schuester
School address: Glee
Will Schuester is played in an awesome way by Matthew Morrison. Will was a highschool heartthrob and he decided to teach in a school where he once went to revive the extracurricular activity called Glee Club. His wife Terry didn't agree with his decision to be a teacher because the salary Will gets wouldn't be enough for their lives.
Teaching Spanish is Will's daily job, and coaching a vocal group, Glee Club is his passion. Will soon becomes the idol for his students but money then soon becomes the issue in his marriage. Will even takes the janitor's job to get extra money, and the school even does not support his effort when he wants to take his Glee Club to a competition. Will use his own money to support Glee Club.
Will is a very dedicated, charming, and loevable teacher that students would love, are you?
2. Sue Sylvester
School address: Glee
Sue is Will's colleague. She hates Will because the Glee club Will revive 'robbed' the budget that h
er Cheerio, cheerleading squad, should have got. Sue is not a bad teacher, but she really hates weak people so sometimes the ways she tries to bring Glee club down look so cruel. Sue is a kind of teacher that always brings the best of their students in very strict ways. She is so competitive, demanding, and even manipulative. In a few chances, we will see that Sue is a kind and soft woman but she always hides it because she hates when people see her weak and sentimental.
3. Ray Drecker
School address: Hung
Played by an action movie star Thomas Jane, Ray Drecker is an unlucky man.
He is a coach in a high school team. His wife divorced him and his children do not want to live with him. His house then was burned down. He is totally broke. Ray then realized that the only thing he is still good at is pleasing women in bed. He has a big dick also. With the help from his friends, he becomes a cheap gigolo after school. Becoming a gigolo is not as glamorous as Ray thinks. He often gets crazy customers, lousy payment and...guess what...his ex-wife then becomes his costumer...
4. Walter White
School address: Breaking Bad
Walter White's life is quite the same as Ray Drecker's. Walter has a pregnant wife and cripple son. He teaches chemistry at a high school. After classes, he works in a car wash and his students often wash their cars there. He feels frustrated to find out that his friend in college becomes a successful entrepreneur because of his work. Yeah, Walter is an overqualified teacher. He is an excellent chemist. Then one day, he met his former student student, Jessi, a drug dealer. Forced by situation and the fact that he's suffering from fatal disease, he then decides to become a cook, the one who makes high quality meths in America. Walter then gets involved with dangerous drug dealers, cartels, mafia and other dangerous players. He has to hide his work from his wife and son, and also from Hank, his brother in law who happens to be a DEA agent. Hank never realizes that the cook he has been chasing is right in front of his eyes all along.
From the 'best teachers' above, we can see that teachers, even in America, are portrayed as desperate and miserable figures. Teachers always have financial problems and do not get respect as they should have got. After all, it's not different at all with those here in Indonesia.
Somebody should make a very good series about Umar Bakri here in Indonesia...!!!
